Review

Brutal and breathtaking, Sin City is Robert Rodriguez's stunningly realized vision of Frank Miller's pulpy comic books.

In the first of three separate but loosely related stories, Marv (Mickey Rourke in heavy makeup) tries to track down the killers of a woman who ended up dead in his bed. In the second story, Dwight's (Clive Owen) attempt to defend a woman from a brutal abuser goes horribly wrong, and threatens to destroy the uneasy truce among the police, the mob, and the women of Old Town. Finally, an aging cop on his last day on the job (Bruce Willis) rescues a young girl from a kidnapper, but is himself thrown in jail. Years later, he has a chance to save her again.

Sin City Review

Easily one of the most stylish films to grace our screens in the last few years, "Sin City" could very well revolutionise the comic book movie genre. Based on a series of gritty and noirish graphic novels, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez has teamed up with creator Frank Miller to bring this dark world to life - and what a fantastic job they've done. The film follows several strands which overlap at various points. These include one cop's (Bruce Willis) crusade against a vile child killer, a tough guy's (Mickey Rourke) quest to find the man who murdered the hooker he loved and a prospective gang war between the mob and some street-savvy ladies of the night.

Filmed entirely against green screen - Rodriguez's techy boffins added the backgrounds later - this film totally immerses you and draws you deep into the black and white world of Miller's violent and grimy imagination where the rain pours in sheets and cops can't always be trusted. The dames are sassy and sexy, the villains are corrupt and evil and the heroes will do whatever it takes to get the job done - often with bloody results.

The film stars a veritable who's who of Hollywood talent including Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Clive Owen, Josh Harnett, Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy and Benicio Del Toro but without doubt this is Mickey Rourke's movie. The "9 1/2 Weeks" star is currently enjoying one of the greatest comebacks since Lazarus and "Sin City" is perhaps his finest hour as he menaces his way through proceedings as Marv, the down-on-his-luck bruiser who finds affection only to have it cruelly snatched away. Unrecognisable under layers of make-up, Rourke is beyond cool as he works over anyone he thinks might have information that will help him while one poor victim goes to the dogs - literally.

"Sin City" certainly isn't the kind of place you'd want to live but we'd highly recommend you go visit.
