Description

Martial arts superstar Jet Li reteams with French writer-director Luc Besson (KISS OF THE DRAGON) in this psychological action film shot in Glasgow, Scotland. Li stars as Danny, a human attack dog for a powerful mobster he calls Uncle Bart (Bob Hoskins, looking resplendent in white suit after white suit). When Bart and his men go out on their collection runs, they bring Danny, who has been trained since he was a child to fight to kill. When Bart takes Dannys collar off and commands, Get im, Danny goes to work, an unstoppable machine, using the only weapon he knows: his body. But when a turf war ends up in bloody carnage, Danny escapes and is taken in by a kind family consisting of blind piano tuner Sam (Morgan Freeman) and his teenage stepdaughter, Victoria (Kerry Condon). They teach Danny how to be a real person, to be able to act civilly in society. They also allow Danny to explore his love of the piano, where a specific tune haunts him, bringing up repressed memories from his long-ago past. Just when Danny thinks he has escaped from his former life, he is pulled back in, but he is no longer the trained dog Bart thinks he is. Written by Besson and directed by Louis Letterier (THE TRANSPORTER), UNLEASHED is a gripping, heart-wrenching film fuelled by the music of Massive Attack and a relentless visual style. And having taken acting lessons for the first time in his career, Li more than holds his own in the presence of such masters as Hoskins and Freeman.

Unleashed Review

Waheey - it's a Jet Li movie so that's a good hour of beatings assured. But wait, what's this? An emotional sub-plot about families and acceptance. Just what on earth is going on?

Originally titled "Danny The Dog" - for reasons that will become clear later - this Glaswegian-set flick opens on local gangster Bart (Bob Hoskins), who loves nothing more that to pick up cash using his heavies as back-up. But when people refuse to pay, Bart unleashes his secret weapon, the brutal and almost feral Danny (Li) who breaks bones and rearranges faces whenever his collar is removed. You see Bart has been training Danny ever since he was a child to obey his every command, keeping him locked in a cage when he's not needed. But when Bart and his cronies are put out of commission by a rival firm, Danny is taken in by a blind piano tuner (Morgan Freeman) and his step-daughter (Kerry Condon) where he starts to confront his demons. But soon Bart is back on the scene and willing to do anything to get his 'attack dog' back.

Ok, first things first, "Unleashed" will not disappoint Li's hardcore action fans. He's on top form when Danny is let loose, often taking on three or four opponents at a time and dispatching them with ease, with an intense scrap in a toilet cubicle standing out. But what separates "Unleashed" from Li's run-of-the-mill action epics, is that it has a heart at its centre.

For probably a 45 minute period we have a Jet Li film in which no-one gets punched, kicked or battered. Instead we have the gentle awakening of a young man as Freeman coaxes him out of his emotionally closed shell. Li gives a surprisingly good performance as Danny, and it's worth seeing "Unleashed" just for a scene in which Freeman goes shopping at his local Spar! Better than expected.
