Andrew Sterling (Samuel L. Jackson) is a self-made black man and Pulitzer Prize winner who purchases an exclusive summer home in a New England resort. On moving in the neighbours think he is a burglar and call the police, who, under the command of Chief Tolliver, stage an all-out assault. When Tolliver realises his mistake he makes a deal with petty crook Amos (Nicolas Cage) that if he breaks into Andrew's house and takes the playwright hostage for a short while, he will be allowed to skip town. However, Amos and Andrew hook up and wreak chaotic revenge on the town bigots.
