Based on George Bernard Shaw’s play, this was Peter Sellers’ first big international hit, thanks not only to the casting of Sophia Loren in the title role but a memorable scene in which she reveals her elaborate undergarments. She’s not merely a millionairess but the world’s richest woman – but her inheritance comes with a catch: her late father’s will states that she can only marry a man who can turn £500 into £15,000 within three months. But when she falls in love with Sellers’ altruistic Indian doctor, she discovers that he not only has no head for business, but that there’s an equally binding requirement made of his own prospective bride, demanding that she adopt a very different lifestyle from the one she’s used to. The superb supporting cast includes Alastair Sim as a Jeeves-like lawyer, Dennis Price as a caddish would-be suitor and Vittorio de Sica as an Italian restaurateur.
