Emerging new talent has blended well with wise old warriors and the mix suggests a bright and bold future. England will be one to fear at this year s Rugby World Cup.
In the tournament s opening performance Chris Ashton served notice of his international ambitions as he blasted through Welsh resistance and England gave a performance full of pace, power and poise.
Ashton was at it again as Italy felt the full force of an eight try England performance at Twickenham and Mark Cueto ended his 18 game try scoring drought. Keeping ball in hand, England were awesome! In a tough battle against the French, the 2010 Grand Slam champions, it was Ben Foden who snaffled the only try of a ferociously contested game. Jonny Wilkinson reclaimed his place at the head of the all time point scoring table. Andy Robinson s underdogs put the bite on England in search of their first Twickenham triumph in 28 years. It needed a try from the returning Tom Croft to see England across the line.
And then came Ireland; defeat in Dublin meant no Slam but certainly not despair. The Rose has been revived. England are, once again, Champions for now it s Europe. The rest of the World waits!
