TECHNOMAJIKAL is a most unusual 1997 collaboration between Jamaican reggae genius Lee "Scratch" Perry and the experimental Swiss electronic duo Yello, who were still best known in the U.S. for their mid-'80s novelty hit "Oh Yeah". Despite Perry's top billing, TECHNOMAJIKAL leans more to the Yello side of the equation. Though Perry gets co-production credit with Yello's Dieter Meier and Martin Kloiber, the twelve largely instrumental tracks are mostly glossy, propulsive dance tracks leavened with bits of Perry's inimitable mixing and trademark stream-of-consciousness vocals, often with little reggae content at all. However, as electronic dance music, it's excellent. The loopy "LSD-LSP", available in both a "flute mix" and a "hard trance mix", is the album's highlight. "UFO Attack (Ambient Version)" and both mixes of the self-mythologising "X Perry Mental" are also impressive.
