A brooding thriller that takes place in Brighton in the 1950s. Tony Aaron (Liam Neeson) is a maverick ex-cop who now makes a living as a private eye setting up fake adultery cases with the help of his wife Hazel. One day, Aaron bursts into a hotel room to find Hazel and their client, a famous American painter, murdered; the painter's body mutilated, and his thumb, with which he signed his paintings, cut off and missing. Two lead suspects are brought to the fore: the painter's widow and his mistress Angeline (Laura San Giacomo). Tony soon falls in love with Angeline but the investigation is turned on it's head when it appears the victims were murdered with Tony s gun and a neighbour leaves a suicide note claiming that he is the killer. Aaron is found guilty of the killings, but right before his execution, a surprising piece of new evidence is discovered that changes everything....
