A spirited England side competed well with the World Cup holders, who were without their talisman, Pele, however they could not prevent the fluent Brazilians proceeding to another world title.
Built on a solid defensive unit England competed well and held their own for most of this monumental quarter-final tie however the scales were titled by one Manuel Francisco dos Santos - the wonderful GARRINCHA. His epic battle with Ron Wilson was the key to the Brazilians being able to unlock the England defence as it was only when the 'little bird' escaped from Wilson's clutches did Garrincha fly.
Unfortunately, he did it twice to bury all England hopes - flying an expert header and a 25-yard drive over Springett.
