When first released, Caroline Link’s moving drama was favourably compared with Shine and Children of a Lesser God, and also secured an Oscar nominee for Best Foreign-Language Film (sign language as well as German). Young Lara has profoundly deaf parents, whom she has to support in numerous ways, not least being their interpreter whenever they need to interact with the outside world. Though she’s not above mischievously mistranslating to suit her own ends (relying on her to interpret at a school parents’ evening is asking for trouble), she knows how much they depend on her. But when her aunt gives her a clarinet for Christmas, she discovers a truly personal hobby for the first time, as well as a talent that she might be able to exploit professionally – but can she abandon her parents to go to Berlin to study something that they will never be able to appreciate?
