The recordings on this double-disc collection mark the point in time in the mid-1950s when Charles Mingus established himself on the American scene as a leading bandleader and composer. Disc One was recorded live in 1955 with trombonist Eddie Bert and tenor saxophonist George Barrow while Disc Two is a classic studio session, one of Mingus's best and best-known albums, featuring post-bop alto sax icon Jackie McLean and the tenor legend J.R. Monterose. Along with Mingus, the great pianist Mal Waldron and drummer Willie Jones are common to both. The music herein is fiery, classy, edgy, and blues-rooted, with an eye on farther horizons.
