Alexandre Dumas père’s classic adventure yarn sprawls across 1,000 pages in print, and although it has been adapted many times for the big screen, it needed an epic TV miniseries to do justice to its wealth of narrative detail. In 1998, it received just that, courtesy of this big-budget French adaptation whose star-studded cast is headed by Gérard Depardieu as merchant sailor Edmond Dantès. Unjustly imprisoned for nearly two decades, he disguises himself as the mysterious Count of Monte Cristo, under which name he exacts a coolly calculated revenge on the men who wronged him. The blood-and-thunder elements of the story are played for all they’re worth, but Depardieu’s nuanced performance never quite abandons his character’s essential humanity. As he says at the start: “Do you think I like being the Count of Monte Cristo? He’s a terrifying man – ruthless and cold. I didn’t want to become that man.”
