Bireli LaGrange has been dubbed the artistic heir of Django Rheinhardt, one of European jazz's greatest stars, and as a guitar player of almost unrivaled virtuosity. It's easy to see why. Django's legacy is apparent here, as Bireli joins forces with Rheinhardt's son, Babik, on a selection of songs that includes Django's 'Nuages', as well as originals from LaGrange's oeuvre. Growing up as a child prodigy and a gypsy himself, LaGrange cut his musical teeth on Django's music, and though his adventurous spirit has led him to experiment with other styles - developing his own in the meantime - he has always stayed close to his roots. These are in full effect on this tribute album, as Bireli manages to do the impossible, channeling Django's spirit with characteristic sparkle and panache.
