Review
Love actually is all around.
From the new bachelor Prime Minister (HUGH GRANT) instantly falling in love with a refreshingly real member of the staff (MARTINE McCUTCHEON) moments after entering 10 Downing Street to a writer (COLIN FIRTH) escaping to the south of France to nurse his re-broken heart who finds love in a lake…
From a comfortably married woman (EMMA THOMPSON) suspecting that her husband (ALAN RICKMAN) is slipping away, to a new bride (KEIRA KNIGHTLEY) mistaking the distance of her husband’s best friend for something it’s not…
From a schoolboy seeking to win the attention of the most unattainable girl in school, to a widowed stepfather (LIAM NEESON) trying to connect with a son he suddenly barely knows…
From a lovelorn junior manager (LAURA LINNEY) seizing a chance with her long-tended, unspoken office crush, to an ageing “seen it all, remember very little of it” rock star (BILL NIGHY) jonesing for an end-of-career comeback in his own uncompromising way…
Love, the equal-opportunity mischief-maker, is causing chaos for all.
These London lives and loves collide, mingle and climax on Christmas Eve—again and again and again—with romantic, hilarious and bittersweet consequences for anyone lucky (or unlucky) enough to be under love’s spell.
Love Actually Review
Is the world getting you down? Are the dark evenings giving you the grump? Well, do yourself a favour and take your weary soul to see the latest film from the creator of "Four Weddings and a Funeral," Richard Curtis. In his first directorial effort, Mr Feel Good returns to his favourite locale of London and follows a myriad of intertwining stories about that ol' devil called luurve. Amongst many love-struck others, there's Hugh Grant's Prime Minister who has to juggle affairs of state as well as a complete crush on his curvaceous secretary; Colin Firth's cuckolded writer nursing his broken heart in the south of France and Keira Knightley's new bride who still hasn't worked out why her husband's best mate is so unfriendly. And as the weeks count down to Christmas, the varied lives of these Londoners are accompanied by the new single from Bill Nighy's wrinkly rock star who's out for a festive number one, come what may.
The great news is that "Notting Hill" fans will have a whale of a time. With both a funeral and a wedding in the first 20 minutes, it's clear that Curtis' knack at combining sentiment and comedy into an enormously pleasing whole is more than alive and well. Some of the stories are inevitably less convincing than others and the film might not pack in as many belly laughs as "Four Weddings" but this is quality feel-good stuff indeed. There's not one but two last-minute journeys to the airport and the obligatory declaration of undying love to enjoy, a heartbreaking performance from Emma Thompson as a spurned wife and the ever brilliant Bill Nighy naked but for a well-placed guitar. A more perfect prescription to the winter blues surely cannot be found.
