During his five-year tenure as pianist for John Coltrane's great quartet, McCoy Tyner recorded a few albums on his own for the Impulse! label. The two sessions comprising this CD find Tyner, already a mature pianist at age 25, still finding his voice as a composer and leader. However, his solo on "Night in Tunisia" is notable for his ability to end his quick linear phrases in such a logical manner, while his playing on the coda of "When Sunny Gets Blue" is tender and subtle. "Tootie" Heath's brushwork is fine throughout, fueling McCoy and locking the rhythm section up tightly with Jimmy Garrison.
The remaining three tunes include "T 'N A Blues," a Thad Jones tune that recalls his later compositions as a big band leader. Jones's trumpet playing is lovely and clear (brother Elvin drums behind him). Also notable is the immediate, searching tenor sax work of John Gilmore (later a disciple of Sun Ra). "Three Flowers," a Tyner original, is a lovely, unpretentious waltz, featuring concise, punchy arrangements and some sweet quicksilver piano runs.
