Gurney, Hill and Shelby brought racing back to the USA and made a historical mark on international racing of the 60's. Both Ford and Lotus came to Indianapolis with the rise of Shelby's world class Cobra GT model cars.
The smaller lighter rear-engines cars represented a turning point in Indy history. Their talents along with the Ford GT won them the Le Mans epic for the first time in 1966 where Gurney also for the first time sprayed champagne on the racing podium!
Following the win Gurney focused on Indy car racing and became the first driver to win championship races in all major categories, Formula 1, Sports Cars, Stock Cars and Indianapolis cars. When he announced his retirement in 1970, he was one of the few drivers to escape fatal injury during a successful racing career.
