In the 1860s, Japan is in turmoil. Momosuke, a would-be author is travelling the countryside in search of 100 stories with which to compose a book. On the road, he meets a trickster, a puppeteer, and a bird caller. Together, as they travel the countryside, they are witnesses to the ugliest, most base aspects of human nature. Along the way, they decide that they are the ones to mete out punishment to those who have transgressed the lines of acceptable behavior.
