Review
Beloved television cult director Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire, Angel) makes
a spectacular first foray onto the big screen with Serenity, the cinematic
adaptation of his wildly popular but short-lived sci-fi series, Firefly.
A mix of space western, comedy, and drama, Serenity follows captain Malcolm
"Mal" Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his ragtag crew as they trade their way
around the edges of civilized society. Of particular interest are two passengers
they take on, Simon and River Tam (Sean Maher, Summer Glau), a brother and his
telepathic sister on the run from the corrupt governing Alliance. As notorious
former members of the anti-Alliance opposition, Mal and his crew make it
difficult for Simon and River to stay hidden. Everything goes completely awry
when a government assassin is sent to retrieve River. As Mal is forced to choose
between his close-knit crew and the brother and sister newcomers, it becomes
apparent that River harbours both a dangerous secret and astounding fighting
powers, and Mal decides that discovering the truth about what she knows might
just be worth his time.
Many of the film's action sequences revolve around Summer Glau's martial arts
skills in her portrayal of River. Glau prepared for her role with Hong Kong
stuntwoman Ming Lu, as well as stunt coordinators Chad Stahelski and Hiro Koda,
and as a resulted performed nearly all the stuntwork herself. In addition to the
stellar stunts, realistic graphics, and an often haunting score, the film's
actors display a rare chemistry that brings viewers both into their lives and
into a possible version of humanity's future.
Serenity Review
A couple of years ago Josh Whedon, the man behind "Buffy" and "Angel", created a TV show called "Firefly" which, while beloved by his loyal fans, was dropped by short-sighted TV execs less than halfway through it's first season. However the DVD box set became a best seller and now, after plenty of lobbying by Whedon and the fans, "Serenity" soars onto our screen and you know what, it's been worth the wait.
The film is set about eight months after the show ended, with Capt. Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and the crew of his ship - the titular Serenity - trying to make a dishonest buck or two on the outer rim of the galaxy. But a couple of passengers they picked up (Summer Glau and Sean Maher) are wanted by the authorities who've sent a deadly assassin known only as The Operative (portrayed by Brit actor Chiwetel Ejiofor) to track them down. Throw in plenty of cracking one-liners, beautifully realised characters and a bunch of merciless space cannibals and "Serenity" proves to be one thrilling ride.
It goes without saying that "Firefly" fans are going to love "Serenity" - it brings their beloved characters back to life and takes everything that made the show so great to a much grander scale. But the real surprise here is that there's plenty for people who've never even heard of the show to enjoy too. Much of it comes from Whedon's flawless ear for dialogue and the obvious bond between the cast, but a lot is also down to the fact that "Serenity" is just damn good science fiction. Essentially a Western in space, this film draws the best from both genres and then injects a healthy dose of humour for good measure.
The action too is impressive as explosive space battles sit alongside hand-to-hand thrills - Summer especially kicks some serious butt! - while some unexpected twists and turns more than keep the audience's attention for the entirety of the two-hour running time.
A hearty pat on the back for Joss Whedon and his crew. And welcome back "Firefly" / "Serenity", long may you fly.
