Review
Director Matthew Vaughn (LOCK STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS) takes his experience with credible crime capers and applies it to the fantasy genre in this charming but not too precious adaptation of Neil Gaimans novel. The many threads of the story intertwine seamlessly unfolding at an unforced pace that complements the movies magical special effects. Charlie Cox (CASANOVA) stars as Tristan a somewhat bumbling shopkeeper’s assistant in the sleepy English village of Wall so named for the stone barrier that separates it from the magical realm of Stormhold. Tristan is in love with the beautiful dismissive Victoria (Sienna Miller) who much prefers her other suitor Humphrey (Henry Cavill) since he has travelled all the way to Ipswich to buy her an engagement ring. Tristan in a last-ditch effort to win Victorias affections offers to bring her a fallen star theyve just seen and she agrees to marry him if he can deliver. Unbeknownst to Tristan he is the product of his fathers (Nathaniel Parker) sole excursion to Stormhold where he had a tryst with a mysterious slave girl (Kate Magowan) who said she was a princess. As Tristan retraces his father’s steps he discovers that the star is actually a beautiful young woman named Yvaine (Claire Danes). A trio of witches led by a delightfully wicked Michelle Pfeiffer wants to capture Yvaine to cut out her heart and gain eternal youth while the three remaining sons of the recently deceased king (Peter OToole) compete with one another to find the gem Yvaine wears around her neck. With special effects that never outshine the performances and a sweet story peppered with hints of Gaimans dark sensibility STARDUST is a truly enchanting fairy tale.
Stardust Review
There's more than a hint of "The Princess Bride" to this British fantasy adventure, which combines colourful characters, genuine romance and laugh-out-loud gags to delightfully winning effect. Based on the novel by Neil Gaiman, "Stardust" stars newcomer Charlie Cox (who could have a big, Hugh Grant-style career ahead of him if his performance here is any guide) as Tristan, a young man who goes off to seek a fallen star, only to discover that the star is in fact a beautiful woman named Yvaine (Claire Danes). Tristan plans to give Yvaine to the town beauty (Sienna Miller) as a gift, but things quickly get complicated when it turns out that she's being pursued by both an evil witch (Michelle Pfeiffer) seeking immortality and a pair of rival princes (Jason Flemyng and Mark Strong) intent on inheriting the kingdom by retrieving the necklace that brought Yvaine to earth.
Director Matthew Vaughn orchestrates some impressive fantasy sequences, while the superb script cleverly balances several different plot strands and is jam-packed with witty lines and hilarious gags. Comic highlights include the costly side-effects of witchery and the bickering interplay between the various deceased princes (Julian Rhind-Tutt, Adam Buxton, Rupert Everett and others) who tag along as ghosts.
The cast are terrific fun, particularly Michelle Pfeiffer, who's clearly having enormous fun as the witch, while Robert DeNiro turns in a wonderful extended cameo as the Dreaded Pirate Captain Shakespeare, who's hiding a certain secret from his bloodthirsty crew. In addition, the romance is extremely affecting, thanks to genuine chemistry between Cox and Danes.
In short, this is a thoroughly enjoyable, frequently hilarious and superbly acted fantasy adventure. Highly recommended.
