The Winter War In the winter of 1939 to 40, tiny Finland held back the might of the Soviet army which stormed the Finland borders with massive tank and artillery firepower, a large air force and well armed infantry. The war continued relentlessly for 105 days, in extreme conditions, through an exceptionally cold and hostile winter. Against all the odds the Finns held strong and this historic battle has come to be known as the Finnish Miracle. Made in 1989, The Winter War was the first real, bloody, hard-hitter of a WW2 movie. It inspired a new generation of war movie realism by recounting war from the soldiers point of view; exposing their lives, their feelings and the visceral experiences of the front-line. Ambush Summer 1941 and the Finnish army has been mobilized along the Russian border. A platoon, led by Lieutenant Eero Perkola, receives orders for a dangerous recon mission to search out Russian defensive positions. As his mission begins he learns that his beloved fiance has been killed in an ambush by Russian partisans. This traumatic event transforms the young Lieutenant from a blue eyed, idealistic officer into a killer intent on vindictive revenge against the enemy. As Perkolas personal war endangers his platoons safety and compromises the entire mission, he must wrestle his inner demons and make a choice.
