THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA is ultimately a human drama that, in its conclusion, offers forgiveness for wrongs committed and a striking note of empathy for lives irrevocably changed. The body of Melquiades Estrada (Julio César Cedillo) is found in a shallow grave in the desert where it was hastily buried after his murder. Making no attempt to solve the crime, the local authorities rapidly transfer the corpse to a pauper's grave in the cemetery. Pete Perkins (Tommy Lee Jones), a ranch foreman and Melquiades' best friend, takes it upon himself to track down the murderer. A beacon of humanity in this remote part of Texas, Pete forces the killer to transport Melquiades to his own personal Eldorado in Mexico, and so offers his friend a memorable journey to his third burial. Directed by Academy-Award winning actor Tommy Lee Jones in his first feature film as a director, the film picked up awards for Best Actor for Tommy Lee Jones and Best Screenplay for Guillermo Arriaga at the recent Cannes Film Festival. Arriaga’s previous credits include the award winning AMORES PERROS and 21 GRAMS. The film’s stunning landscape is captured by two-time Academy Award winning cinematographer Chris Menges.
