When No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom blasted its way on to the charts in the late '90s, major labels began scrounging for ska core bands. This led to the signing of many artists that long time fans considered less than adequate. In addition, thousands of carbon copy bands sprung up, further weakening the music's underground base. That is what makes the Usuals 1998 debut album all the more entertaining. It is actually the opposite of this trend. Instead of ska core the group's music relies heavily on the lovers rock sounds of Jimmy Cliff. What really sets this album apart is vocalist Julie Esbjorn, whose hypnotic high-pitched vocals sound nothing like Gwen Stefani's. Instead, her voice is similar to fellow indie-ska diva Jessica Butler of the Skalars. While faltering in a few places because of weak songwriting, this album is proof that the ska underground wasn't totally soiled by the mainstream. ~ Curtis Zimmermann
