The center of jazz might have shifted from Chicago to New York during 1927-1928, but there were still many hot classic jazz performances recorded in Chicago during the late '20s; 24 are on this CD. Featured are clarinetist Omer Simeon (heard on his only two selections as a leader from the era), pianist Earl Hines (as a sideman), singer Helen Savage, the Dixie Rhythm Kings, Alex Hill, Harry Dial's Bluesicians, and Lloyd Smith's Gut-Bucketeers. In the supporting cast are such fine players as trumpeter Shirley Clay, drummer Wallace Bishop, banjoist Ikey Robinson, and pianist Zinky Cohn. Among the better selections are "Beau-Koo Jack," "Storybook Ball," "Dyin' With the Blues," "Southbound," and "I'm Going Away to Wear You Off My Mind." Highly recommended for 1920s jazz collectors. ~ Scott Yanow
