Collection of documentaries presented by humorist, writer, wit, actor, and novelist Stephen Fry. In 'Stephen Fry in America' Fry journeys around America's states to discover what makes the country, and its people, so different. Passing through every state in his black London cab, he stops off to visit, among other places, the extravagant homes of the rich in upstate New York, lava fields in Hawaii, the battlefields at Gettysburg, and New Orleans' Mardi Gras. In 'Last Chance to See' Fry teams up with zoologist Mark Carwardine to recreate the journey Cawardine made 20 years ago, with the late author Douglas Adams, in search of some of the rarest animals on the planet. The programme takes the pair on six unique journeys, ranging from a war-torn landscape in Central Africa, to the tropical climes of the Amazonian rainforests, where they investigate how, and more importantly, if, the animals have managed to survive. In 'Last Chance to See - Return of the Rhino' Fry sets out in search of another endangered species. In this programme, Stephen and Mark embark on a new adventure to follow an attempt to release White Rhinos from captivity and return them to Kenya. In 'The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive' Fry explores the condition of manic depression or bipolar disorder, a condition with which he himself has battled over the years. His emotional but entertaining journey takes him into the homes of stars including Carrie Fisher, Richard Dreyfuss and Rick Stein; into the lives of ordinary people who juggle the illness with their working and family lives; and into the clinics of psychiatrists and the laboratories of researchers who are trying to find ways to manage and treat the condition. In 'Stephen Fry: HIV and Me' he travels across continents to see first hand the affect HIV has had on the lives of those involved. As well as meeting some of the earliest people diagnosed with the illness, Fry also talks to the doctors who were responsible for bringing the disease to the attention of the world. Finally, in 'Stephen Fry and the Gutenberg Press' he travels across Europe to find out about the history, development and present-day influences of Johann Gutenberg's revolutionary invention, before setting to work to build his own copy of the very first printing press.
