Jazz-funk was at its peak in 1971, the year vibraphonist and leader in the genre Roy Ayers released HE'S COMING. Fueled by Ayers's Christian faith and inspired, at least in part, by the then popular musical JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR (the album includes a cover of "I Don't Know How to Love Him"), HE'S COMING speaks to the spiritual and social concerns of the time. Backed here by a mighty band that includes drummer Billy Cobham and saxphonist Sonny Fortune, Ayers delivers plenty of the cool-toned, funky jazz-pop for which he's known (though this collection delivers a bit more fire than some of his later, smoother sides). Highlights include the passionate title cut and the spacy, soulful "We Live in Brooklyn, Baby."
