After Iggy & the Stooges broke up for good in early 1974, guitarist James Williamson and singer Iggy Pop tried to make it as a duo. Iggy first had to be admitted to a mental hospital to get his life back on track before he could resume his music career (drug addiction and physical injuries had put Iggy in a suicidal, depressed state). So when he was on medical leave from the hospital, he recorded demos with Williamson. The pair couldn't secure a recording contract, so they went their separate ways soon after, but Bomp Records assembled these tracks as 1977's KILL CITY album.
Two selections from KILL CITY ("Consolation Prizes" and "Johanna") and an unreleased song ("Jesus Loves the Stooges") are included on JESUS LOVES THE STOOGES three track EP, re-issued as a CD in 1995 with a 3-D cover. "Johanna" is a bona-fide classic, full of all the elements that made the Stooges such an influential and legendary act--Iggy's attitude-heavy vocals, Williamson's sturdy guitar riffing, a simple but grooving backbeat, etc. The stark title track is one of the strangest cuts ever released by Iggy (Pop's voice is only accompanied by blues piano and lethargic percussion), while the upbeat "Consolation Prizes" is its complete opposite.
