While Horace Andy's early work (IN THE LIGHT comes immediately to mind) is among the best reggae ever recorded, Andy took an interesting turn in the '90s, opting to work with trip-hop bigwigs Massive Attack and the always forward-thinking dubmaster Mad Professor. Fortunately, taking chances paid off for Andy: his work has not been hindered by his move away from the standard recording practices of reggae.
ROOTS AND BRANCHES has Andy at his nasal, high-pitched vocal best. He carries every rhythm with wonderful control over his positive lyrics. On production, Mad Professor rolls out some of his best tracks of the 1990s, including the oft-reworked "Kunte Kinte" riddim on a song of the same title. The rolling percussion and ultra-deep basslines are powerful enough to rattle brains and shake innards when heard on a good system. While the majority of the tracks steep in a deep roots stew, a few tracks like "Betcha By Golly Wow" and "Sugar My Coffee" have a decidedly lighter, lovers' rock feel.
