Going boldly where no man had gone before, Gene Roddenberry's cult phenomenon Star Trek debuted in 1966 and reflected that decade's optimistic preoccupation with space travel. Set in the 23rd century, the series chronicled the intergalactic adventures of the U.S.S. Enterprise on its five-year mission to explore the outer reaches of space. Encountering a now-iconic assembly of innovative alien life forms such as the Klingons, Romulans, Tribbles, and Khan Noonian Singh, the ship's jumpsuited crew was a then unheard-of font of multiculturism: Asian Hikaru Sulu (George Takei), African-American Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), and Scotsman Montgomery Scotty Scott (James Doohan). But it was the contrasting personalities of cooly logical Vulcan Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), emotionally intuitive medical officer Leonard Bones McCoy (DeForest Kelley), and womanizing ship captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner in definitive overacting mode) that lent the series much of its charm--and spawned a rabid cult following that continues to fuel costume sales and convention bookings to this very day. Presented in this fantastic collection is the entire original series of the widely popular Star Trek phenomenon. A must have for all fans and newcomers alike.

Customer Reviews

Ignore previous review!!!

The previous reviewer gives this set a low rating because only the remastered version are available. Maybe he should re-check his discs. Each episode is presented in it's remastered/renewed version which has the new special effects and music AND in their original format with the dodgy FX and music.

This is an incredible set for any Star Trek fan; and a must-own at this ridiculously low price.

Digitally remastered = soul scrapped

I was really excited to get my hands on the complete TOS at an amazingly low price. But when I watched the first few episodes I realized something was not as it should be. I remembered the special effects to be more "homebrewed" than what I saw on my screen now. And the theme song used to have a soprano in it, right?

Then I watched the extra on the first DVD about "Transporting Trek to the 21st century" and it showed how they've "remastered" the complete series by replacing spaceships on strings with CGI and rerecording all the music.

Dear producers: It might look more state of the art now, but it is a series from the 60s and has a right to look like a series from the 60s. The crappy animations and special effects in the original are part of the Star Trek experience. So messing around with it is completely uncalled for.

What made me only give it two stars is the fact that the remastering is mentioned nowhere in the product description. Maybe they thought that would keep trekkies from buying the item. Well, they are right!
