Phil Miller's In Cahoots band is something of a UK supergroup, drawing players from the classic Canterbury '70s jazz-rock scene as well as from the British free-jazz movement. Accordingly, the sound incorporates elements of both styles, but doesn't linger too long on either. In fact, ALL THAT winds up closer to a straight-ahead fusion style on many of the tracks. When keyboardist Peter Lemer (Gilgamesh, Ray Russell) tweaks his synth for a burning solo, there are echoes of vintage Mahavishnu Orchestra, for example. But when his sound takes on more digital tone, things edge curiously towards '80s fusion on the order of Chick Corea's Elektric Band. Regardless of the idiom, though, the solo work of guitar whiz Miller (vet of too many Canterbury legends to name), trumpeter Jim Dvorak (Keith Tippett), and famed Soft Machine sax giant Elton Dean are energetic and inspired, and seem capable of coming across to jazz fans of any stripe.
