The Art Ensemble of Chicago had been leading lights of the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, THE collective for modern creative jazz since the early '60s) since their formation in 1965. When the band recorded 1978's NICE GUYS for Manfred Eicher's immensely influential ECM label, Eicher wisely didn't attempt to iron out the kinks in this fiercely individual quintet, a group where no one was the leader, or everyone was, depending on the mood of the moment.
Their wide-ranging eclecticism is on full display throughout NICE GUYS, but the album is best known for its closing piece, "Dreaming of the Master", a sincere tribute to the late-'50s and early '60s configurations of the Miles Davis Quintet. Without sacrificing the group's freer qualities or their own distinctive tonalities, trumpeter Lester Bowie and soprano/tenor saxophonist Joseph Jarman play beautifully and reverently in the respective styles of Davis and of John Coltrane. A masterpiece.
