Based on the true story of Robert Stroud, as told by Tom Gaddis in his renowned biography. Hardened murderer Stroud (Burt Lancaster) is a withdrawn prison inmate who discovers a way of dealing with his isolation when he begins to care for a sick bird, nurses it back to health, develops an interest in ornithology, and becomes a world authority on the subject. Even when he is transferred to the notorious 'Rock' in San Francisco Bay, his interest does not abate.

Product Reviews

Brilliant portrayal of the true story of Robert Stroud

The man Lancaster plays actually spent nearly sixty years in prison. The film can seem overlong but maybe it should be to make the point.
