Fans of psych-folk and traditional Celtic music can rarely find common cause. Enter OLD HAG YOU HAVE KILLED ME, the 1976 masterpiece by neo-Celtic mavens, the Bothy Band, who combine dizzyingly accomplished chops and ear-candy production in a sonic brew equally friendly to Irish step-dancing or gazing into a lava lamp. For their second full-length, the sextet--aka "the most important Celtic band of the rock era"--replaced fiddler Tommy Peoples with Kevin Burke, and matched monster repetitive-riff instrumentals such as "Michael Gorman's" with slower, more somber ballads such as "The Maid of Coolmore", which features vocalist Triona Ni Dhomhnaill. Worth the sticker price alone is "Fionnghuala", the stunningly weird second track, essentially a lightning-quick a capella chant in Gaelic.
