Luchino Visconti’s penultimate film reunited the veteran Italian master with Burt Lancaster (who had previously starred in The Leopard) for an elegant widescreen comedy of manners set almost entirely within the confines of a lavishly appointed house in Rome. There, Lancaster’s retired professor maintains an art collection of eighteenth-century ‘conversation pieces’, a distraction from the domestic shenanigans that result when he is persuaded to rent part of his house to a vulgarly ostentatious countess (Silvana Mangano) and her entourage, including her preening lover Konrad (Helmut Berger). But instead of being repelled by this constant noisy infringement of his privacy, the professor is oddly fascinated, especially by Konrad, whose youthful follies (including revolutionary politics) have a revivifying effect: he leads the kind of physically, emotionally and sexually perilous existence that the professor consciously avoided when he opted for decades of scholarship and a preference for high art over real life.
