The late reeds player (clarinet, saxophone, bassoon) Garvin Bushell is a true rarity, a musician whose career stretches back to jazz's earliest-ever recordings (with blues singer Ethel Waters, circa 1920) through the days of the big bands (Fletcher Henderson, Cab Calloway) to appearing on early `60s sessions led by John Coltrane and Miles Davis/Gil Evans. (Bushell even gave lessons to R&B sax icon King Curtis.) ONE STEADY ROLL is one of the very few sessions Bushell got to lead in his lifetime--it's a tidy, heartfelt session of traditional jazz featuring Leon Oakley (cornet), John Markham (drums), and Barbara Lashley (vocals on three songs).
