Deemed a child prodigy, guitarist Julian Lage was playing with the likes of Carlos Santana by the time he was eight years old, and became the subject of an Academy Award-nominated documentary JULES AT EIGHT. That's a fair bit of hype to precede a debut album, but Lage lives up to the task. SOUNDING POINT arrived in 2009 (Lage was 21 at the time of its release), and showcases his remarkable blend of jazz, classical, and folk styles. The album features a few covers, including a bluegrass version of Elliott Smith's "Alameda" and an inventive take on Miles Davis's "All Blues," but the real surprise, second only to the musicianship, is Lage's complex, cool-toned originals. Bela Fleck and Chris Thile guest.
