Since her days as a regular member of Anthony Braxton's quartet, Marilyn Crispell has established herself as a major pianist on the international scene. Her style, inspired by John Coltrane, is capable of being serenely lyrical and volcanic, often within the same piece. This time out, Crispell works with some Scandinavian players she's not recorded with previously. Drummer Paul Nilssen-Love is one of the most versatile free jazz drummers in Europe while ECM label-mate, bassist Palle Danielsson, is a sensitive acoustic player. They, and various intrepid horn players, keep pace with Crispell, all matching her intensity. As Crispell so often records in a trio context, this set is a major departure in her discography.
