Under the name of Synergy, synthesizer whiz Larry Fast made a series of albums in the '70s and early '80s that redefined the meeting place between rock and electronic music. This 1981 album was the culmination of a process that began with such '70s Synergy recordings as SEQUENCER and ELECTRONIC REALIZATIONS FOR ROCK ORCHESTRA. On AUDION, regarded by aficionados as Fast's finest hour, the late-'70s Tangerine Dream-style sequencer rhythms of early Synergy are largely absent, replaced by a sound that owes more to progressive rock than to pseudo-soundtrack music.
Many of the tracks here have a low-key charm, but at times Fast gets nearly symphonic in his grandeur, offering classical-sounding counterpoint and near-orchestral arrangements complete with electronic approximations of tympani. At the time of this recording, synthesizer technology was still in an early stage of development, and it's remarkable how much Fast is able to achieve using electronic instruments exclusively.
