The Great Italian Detective

Inspector Montalbano is back – as you’ve never seen him before. These are the tales of the young Inspector Montalbano, with all the integrity but less of the experience of his older, possibly wiser, self.

Exhausted by the neverending hillsides of his rural Sicilian beat, the Deputy Inspector – in the midst of investigating a murder - finds himself promoted to Inspector and dispatched to his childhood home of Vigata.

There he will be called upon to take control of the local police station and gradually build his team with both Fazio Senior and Fazio Junior, Domenico ‘Mimi’ Augello and the young and exceedingly eager Officer Catarella. Along the way he’ll discover the simple dining pleasures of Calogero’s, and the unexpected passions that will guide him into the waiting – always waiting - arms of Livia.

Drawing on the bestselling novels and short stories of acclaimed Italian author Andrea Camilleri, in a Sicilian world of loan sharks, mafia families, drug-dealing, perilous love affairs and murder, Michele Riondini is Young Montalbano.

Product Reviews

Is young always the best?

The series ' il giovanne Montalbano ' or as it is widely better known, ' The Young Montalbano ' has to be without any doubt THE best detective series that has graced our screens. For those who speak Italian it is exceptional, but even so for those who would rely on the use of subtitles.

That very use should not stop anyone from purchasing this as it is still compelling even if you have to look at them. All that said, even after taking subtitles into account it still leaves you with an altruistic sense of wellbeing when you watch one of the episodes. Beware though, they run for almost two hours a few, but that said, it is partly what adds to the charm of the series and the storylines that develop along the way.

Such as how Commissario Montalbano initially meets the woman that he devotes his time to, Livia Burlando, but not until he has eluded 'mimi augello' his deputy, who as the Romeo of the cast, tries to woo her, but to no avail on his part. Yet, all set in a sinister but clam storyline of a child being allegedly abducted over a family feud of a fishing emporium.

We saw this first on British to when it aired, we liked it so much that we bought it from this site. We are fortunate to have seen the next series before it is aired in the UK and that, while being updated in its storylines, changes direction numerous times and doesn't leave you feeling as if you spent hours watching a limp, wet effort.

We recommend anyone to buy this series and then series 2 as and when it is released next year....

You will certainly not be disappointed, especially if lime my wife, you drool at the sight of the main character, Michelle Riondino - aka Inspector Montalbano.
