THE WAR YEARS 1942 Taking the Initiative A bad start to the year as the bastion of Tobruk in North Africa fell to the Nazis. However, General Bernard Montgomery soon turned the tables on the Germans at the battle of El Alamein. The War Years 1943 The Tide Turns The Red Army were recapturing land and pushing the Germans back. Meanwhile, in North Africa the Allies were winning and when Sicily fell Mussolini was forced to leave office. THE WAR YEARS 1944 To the Doorstep of Germany The Germans had begun their retreat from Russia and the Allies liberated Rome on June 5th. For Britain, all attention was focused on the invasion of France 'D-Day'. THE WAR YEARS 1945 Victory! After the Battle of the Bulge, the Allies pushed deeper into Germany. However, the war in the Pacific still raged on until the Atomic bombs were dropped in Japan. THE WAR YEARS D-DAY The Story of Overlord D-Day, was the largest invasion force ever assembled. This memorable film recounts this unprecedented allied invasion as it was told by the newsreels in Britain 60 years ago.
