Waylon Jennings, who began his career as the bassist for Buddy Holly's Crickets, was never an easy fit for Nashville, but before his storied Texas-sized rebellion against country's mainstream in the '70s, he made a slew of records balancing syrupy Nashville styles and his own maverick tendencies. COUNTRY FOLK--one of the best of these--finds a sonorously crooning Jennings draped with stringed orchestrations, '60s ear candy such as harpsichord, and the sterling harmonies of a folk quartet, the Kimberleys. The marriage is odd on the surface, but works swimmingly as the nascent outlaw channels his inner Charlie Rich on great performances of--among many others--Gordon Lightfoot's "Long Way Back Home" and Jimmy Webb's classic "MacArthur Park," which garnered Jennings and the Kimberleys a Grammy in 1969.
